Irene Carney, Executive Director
Irene Carney, Ph.D., brings over 30 years of experience in education to her role as Sabot at Stony Point’s Executive Director. That experience has included: extensive study of child development and learning theory, most recently as adjunct faculty in VCU’s School of Education 2005-2006; research and writing on the critical relationships between parents and educators (pursued through her dissertation and research faculty focus at the University of Virginia, 1981-1986); participation in organizational

Betsy Vest, Receptionist
Betsy has extensive school administration background, thanks to her 17 years of experience in the public school sector. She has been at Sabot at Stony Point for several years, and is very happy to be a part of the community. She enjoys the daily interaction with students, families and faculty, and finds constant inspiration in the children’s enthusiasm for learning and life in general.

Susan Barstow, Curriculum Director (Grades 3-8)
Susan brings a strong research background, expertise in curriculum development, and extensive teaching experience to her role as Director of Curriculum for Grades 3-8. She earned her Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Virginia, and her B.A. from Amherst College. She believes that a teacher cannot simply fill students' minds, but must inspire and support them as they construct their own knowledge. Learning should combine joy and rigor; for Susan,

Marty Gravett, Director of Early Childhood Education
Marty leads development and implementation of our curriculum and educational program, and serves as a resource for teachers. She has spent more than thirty years working in the early childhood field, as a teacher, teacher-researcher, program director, and consultant. Her undergraduate degree is in anthropology, and she earned her Master’s in child development from Virginia Tech.
Marty represents our school in the Lugano Collaborative, a community of academics and practitioners

Maggie Barrett, Director of Admissions and Enrollment
Maggie is the daughter of a U.S. Foreign Service Officer, and she spent many of her formative years living overseas. This exposure fueled her interest in all things international, and she received her Bachelor’s degree in International Economics from the George Washington University. Despite a successful career in financial and operations management, she elected to stay home after the birth of her daughter.She returned to work in 2007 as Admissions Coordinator

Elizabeth Hanson, Director of Administration
Elizabeth brings a varied background and unique perspective to her work at Sabot at Stony Point. She obtained a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan, taught on the faculty at Virginia Military Institute and the United States Naval Academy, and also served eleven years as a Naval Officer. She is a Richmond native and the daughter of an independent school administrator.

Mary Scott Swanson, Director of Development
Mary Scott began her development career with the Science Museum of Virginia Foundation, and progressed into senior management levels at The Richmond Symphony and later at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Business. Prior to joining Sabot at Stony Point, she spent six years as a senior consultant with Stumpf & Associates, Inc., a Richmond-based fundraising consulting company.

Tammy Cormier, Bookkeeper
Tammy comes to Sabot at Stony Point after serving as Database Manager for four years at another Richmond,VA based independent school. Before beginning work in the independent school arena she spent four years traveling to public school districts throughout the U.S. and internationally in her position as a Consultant and Trainer for a large software company which produced Student Information Systems. Previous to this she held positions as a Database Administrator for an
