EXCURSIONS: VMFA for Families

Explore the treasure trove of art at VMFA. Join Kerry Mills, art
historian, for a fun-"lled, informative tour through the museum.
We will explore, discuss and sketch the art we encounter,
visiting a di!erent gallery each time. Come to one or both. We
leave school after carpool and meet at VMFA in the lobby. (Minimum of 3 and maximum of 10)
Fridays: February 17 and March 23

EXPLORE: James River Walk
Instructor: Kerry Mills
Grades K – 5
The James River is a local treasure. We will explore the river at
the children’s pace, approaching it as environmentalists, artists,
writers, ecologists and biologists. Bring a water bottle and snack.
Dress for the weather and wear shoes that can get wet and are
good for walking. (Minimum of 4 and maximum of 8) A few parents are needed to transport children to the river.

GROW: Sabot at Stony Point's Community Garden Project
All Ages
Thanks to the generosity of the Parents Association, Kerry Mills
and Pippin Barnett with experts from the community we are
creating a community growing garden for Sabot. Together with
the children and their families we will lay beds, grow seedlings,
build cold frames, work the soil and compost, construct a worm
farm, as well as plant, tend, harvest, and care for food we grow.
Register for as many meetings as you like. Parents of preschoolers should plan to stay with their children.

(no GROW on March 7, April 11, and May 16)

YOU AND ME: Puppets
Instructor: Kerry Mills
Ages 3 – 5
Working together over lunch, an adult and a child will make original puppets of wool felt for a puppet show we will produce based on a story chosen by the participants. This multi-generational class is perfect for a parent, grandparent, grown-up friend, or care-giver and a child. Bring lunches and water bottles. (Minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 pairs)
Thursdays: April 26 and May 3

EXPLORE: Evening Bat Search with Maymont

Ages 5 and up
Learn about one of nature’s most fascinating creatures on this
summer night hike. Using spotlights and bat detectors, families
will seek out these mysterious friends on the grounds of Sabot at
Stony Point. (Minimum of 30 participants, an adult must accompany child)
