Challenging Themselves, Supporting Others, and Having Fun:
Middle School Students
and PE
By Renee Kunnen

PE is an essential part of Sabot at Stony Point’s Middle School program: it takes place four times a week, and is held outdoors except in heavy rain or stormy weather. Substantial research demonstrates the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits to children of spending time outside, of physical activity, and of opportunities for social interaction, and our approach to PE allows us to combine all three.

Drop by during a PE class, and you might see cheer circles, where one student completes a strength exercise and his or her partner’s job is to offer encouragement — as loudly as possible. That gets everyone laughing and trying a little harder.

Our “nobody’s out” philosophy keeps everyone involved. So you’ll see tag — its stop-and-go nature is a great interval challenge — but instead of traditional tag, you’ll find students playing heads vs. tails or chicken tag, where the

    SCHOOL NEWS

We are proud to announce our acceptance as a fully accredited member of the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS). We are pleased to be joining our VAIS colleagues in the work of upholding the very highest standards of educational excellence in the Commonwealth.

Our very own Allison Mecadon has been chosen as the Regional Volunteer of the Year for the National Guard Volunteers (covering 7 states) for 2012. This is a huge honor and she is very excited. She serves as the Family Readiness Group Leader for the 29th Infantry Division and is also the leader for families who have a currently deployed soldier (as she does). There are 10 volunteers from around the country who have been awarded this honor, and Allison is one of them. Congratulations, Allison, on this well-deserved recognition!

Our community collected over 1,000 pounds of food during our Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service to donate to the Central Virginia Food Bank and the breakfast program at the Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School. Thank you to all for your generosity!

THE UMBRELLA PROJECT 2011/12

An umbrella project gathers our learning community under the canopy of a single idea. We all start at the same point – a multi–layered concept, topic, or question chosen by faculty – and delve deeply into it.

Teachers plan a series of initial experiences that draw students into the investigation and spark creative thinking. Students carry the inquiry forward through further exploration and discovery, developing synergies and shared perspectives that connect them to one another across classrooms and grade levels.

There are children who, when faced with a problem, take out the building materials and begin to play. They love to figure things out using real tools and real materials. These children are the engineers, the “mess-arounders,” and the eternally curious. This school year, we will follow their lead as we gather under the umbrella idea “tinkering.”
